No es enigma..., es el fruto de nuestras decisiones presentes

Ayer, la comunidad de Hive account@talentos nos lanzó una invitación sugerente: escribir sobre la premisa de que "el futuro es un misterio". Al leerlo, sentí una pequeña resistencia interna..., disiento. Entiendo el encanto poético de la frase; nos gusta imaginar el mañana como una neblina espesa donde cualquier cosa puede saltar a nuestro encuentro. Sin embargo, si nos detenemos a diseccionar las palabras, la realidad es otra.

Para que algo sea un misterio, debe cumplir con su raíz etimológica: el griego mystērion. Un misterio es un secreto absoluto, un suceso arcano, algo que, por definición, es imposible de explicarse o comprender. Lo sagrado es un misterio; el origen de la conciencia podría ser un misterio. Pero el futuro no encaja en ese molde. El futuro no es algo que "está ahí fuera" esperando a ser descubierto, como un tesoro enterrado o una habitación cerrada bajo llave.

El futuro es, en realidad, el segmento de la línea temporal compuesto por los eventos que aún no ocurren, pero que ya se están gestando. No es un secreto; es un horizonte de expectativas. Como bien dijo el filósofo y gestor *Peter Drucker: "La mejor manera de predecir el futuro es creándolo", entonces, bajo esta premisa, el mañana deja de ser un enigma para convertirse en una responsabilidad.

Si analizo mi propia vida, veo que el futuro no me "sucede" por arte de magia. Mi futuro es la cosecha de lo que sembré ayer y de lo que estoy regando hoy. No es un arcano indescifrable; es una consecuencia lógica. Si hoy decido estudiar, mañana tendré conocimiento. Si hoy decido caminar, mañana tendré salud. No hay misterio en la causalidad. Baruch Spinoza, el filósofo de la ética, sugería que si conociéramos todas las causas que operan en el presente, el futuro sería perfectamente previsible. Aunque no tenemos esa capacidad de cómputo divina, sí tenemos la agencia humana para moldear el barro del tiempo.

A menudo usamos la palabra "misterio" para disfrazar nuestra incertidumbre o nuestro miedo a la incertidumbre. Pero la incertidumbre no es ausencia de explicación, es solo falta de datos. Antonio Machado lo dejó escrito con una claridad en sus versos: "Caminante, no hay camino, se hace camino al andar". Si el futuro fuera un misterio, el camino ya estaría ahí, oculto por un velo. Pero Machado nos dice que no hay nada detrás del velo; el camino se materializa bajo la presión de nuestros pasos.

Por eso, me atrevo a proponer una corrección a la frase del encuentro. En lugar de decir que "el futuro es un misterio", deberíamos decir: "El futuro es una construcción deliberada".

Mirar el porvenir como una arquitectura nos devuelve el poder, nos saca del papel de espectadores pasivos que esperan a que el destino revele sus cartas y nos coloca en la silla del arquitecto. El futuro es el fruto de nuestras decisiones presentes. Es un lienzo que no está en blanco, sino que ya tiene los trazos que empezamos a dibujar esta mañana.

Para los amigos que hacemos cita cada martes en Hive account@talentos, mi reflexión es esta: no busquen resolver el misterio del mañana. Más bien, enfoquen su energía en la maestría del ahora. El futuro no es un suceso arcano; es el "porvenir", aquello que viene hacia nosotros porque nosotros mismos le hemos dado forma. No es un secreto que nos será revelado, sino una historia que estamos escribiendo en tiempo real, con cada clic, con cada palabra en HIVE y con cada decisión que tomamos al despertar.

Seamos realistas: el mañana no es una sorpresa. Es el resultado.

It’s no mystery… it’s the result of the choices we make today

Yesterday, the Hive account@talentos community issued us with an intriguing invitation: to write on the premise that “the future is a mystery”. On reading it, I felt a slight inner resistance… I beg to differ. I understand the poetic charm of the phrase; we like to imagine tomorrow as a thick mist where anything might spring out to meet us. However, if we stop to dissect the words, the reality is quite different.

For something to be a mystery, it must live up to its etymological root: the Greek mystērion. A mystery is an absolute secret, an arcane event, something that, by definition, is impossible to explain or understand. The sacred is a mystery; the origin of consciousness might be a mystery. But the future does not fit that mould. The future is not something that ‘is out there’ waiting to be discovered, like a buried treasure or a locked room.

The future is, in reality, the segment of the timeline comprising events that have not yet occurred, but which are already taking shape. It is not a secret; it is a horizon of expectations. As the philosopher and management expert Peter Drucker rightly said: “The best way to predict the future is to create it”, so, on this basis, tomorrow ceases to be an enigma and becomes a responsibility.

If I look at my own life, I see that the future does not simply ‘happen’ to me as if by magic. My future is the harvest of what I sowed yesterday and what I am watering today. It is not an indecipherable mystery; it is a logical consequence. If I decide to study today, tomorrow I will have knowledge. If I decide to walk today, tomorrow I will have good health. There is no mystery in causality. Baruch Spinoza, the philosopher of ethics, suggested that if we knew all the causes at work in the present, the future would be perfectly predictable. Although we do not possess that divine capacity for calculation, we do have the human agency to shape the clay of time.

We often use the word ‘mystery’ to disguise our uncertainty or our fear of uncertainty. But uncertainty is not the absence of an explanation; it is merely a lack of data. Antonio Machado put it so clearly in his verses: ‘Wayfarer, there is no path; the path is made by walking’. If the future were a mystery, the path would already be there, hidden by a veil. But Machado tells us that there is nothing behind the veil; the path materialises under the pressure of our footsteps.

That is why I dare to propose a correction to the phrase from the meeting. Instead of saying that ‘the future is a mystery’, we should say: ‘The future is a deliberate construction’.

Viewing the future as a work of architecture puts the power back in our hands; it takes us out of the role of passive spectators waiting for fate to reveal its hand, and places us in the architect’s chair. The future is the result of our present decisions. It is a canvas that is not blank, but already bears the strokes we began to draw this morning.

To the friends I meet every Tuesday at Hive account@talentos, my reflection is this: do not seek to solve the mystery of tomorrow. Rather, focus your energy on mastering the present. The future is not some arcane event; it is the ‘to-come’, that which comes towards us because we ourselves have shaped it. It is not a secret to be revealed to us, but a story we are writing in real time, with every click, with every word on HIVE and with every decision we make upon waking.

Let’s be realistic: tomorrow is not a surprise. It is the result.
