It is not simply a matter of declaring ourselves to be true followers of the Jesus Christ. It is concerning the way we live day-by-day. In Luke 9: 23, Jesus explained that any man who wants to follow him should deny himself, carrying his own cross daily and following him.
This implies that the journey to follow Him involves sacrifice, obedience and the heart willing to do it. It may not be simple, nevertheless it is the correct way.
An actual follower will hear what Jesus has to say and follow it. Jesus told them, in John 8:31, that, in case they remain in my word, they will be my disciples. This illustrates that being a disciple is not a one time affair, but is a lifelong process.
I have now learned that I cannot simply hear the Word but I need to put it into practice in my life. I am learning to walk as a disciple when I make a choice to be kind, patient and truthful even when it is difficult.
Another good indication of a true disciple is love. In John 13: 35 Jesus said, By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, If ye have love one to another. This love does not only belong to friends but to everyone including the persons who abuse us.
This is sometimes challenging to me but I remember that, Jesus loved us first, even when we were not good. There should be that type of love in me.
The other significant section is obedience. In John 14: 15, Jesus said, love me and keep my commandments. This informs me that I demonstrate my love to Him in my deeds.
As I follow His teachings, I demonstrate that I have a real faith. It is not about perfection but the effort to do it on an everyday basis and attempt to live according to His will.
Lastly, a genuine disciple will be obedient until the end. In Mathew 24:13, it states that, But he which shall persevere unto the end, the same shall be saved.
It will not be easy in life but I should not quit. I need to continue having faith in God, continue praying, and continue believing.
Conclusively, to be a real follower of Jesus Christ is to live a life of love, obedience, sacrifice and faith. It is a daily commitment. I will fall sometimes but go on to rise and serve Him, He is my Lord and Savior.
