This morning hit me hard. I checked my blood pressure, and it read 198 over 107. That's not just high—it's a full-blown crisis. I've been hovering around 150/100 in recent doctor visits, and my doc had to step up my meds: staying on Valsartan but adding Amlodipine in the afternoons at 6 PM. It's a combination that's commonly used when one med isn't enough to get things under control.
But meds are only part of the story. This spike is my body's screaming wake-up call, and I'm listening.
Three years ago, I was in a similar (actually worse) spot. At 5'9" and 245 pounds, I was carrying way too much weight. I had severe sleep apnea that left me exhausted every day, and my blood pressure was dangerously high. I was miserable, and deep down, I knew it was unsustainable.

Then I made a radical change: I went very low-carb, cutting out all sugars, starches, breads, rice, and processed junk. My diet became simple and powerful:
Very little carbs overall. No exercise at first—just strict diet. In 4 months, I dropped 45 pounds down to around 200, then kept going to 190 pounds. The results were life-changing:
After about 6 months of strict low-carb, I slowly reintroduced some starches like rice, bread, and even a bit of sugar. It felt harmless at the time. Fast-forward three years: I'm now 212 pounds (up 20+ from my low), dealing with creeping high blood pressure again, and mild sleep apnea returning. It's not as bad as before, but it's annoying and a clear warning sign.

At 46 years old, I'm staring down the barrel of heading back to 245 if I don't stop now. My wife is pregnant—about two months along—and we're expecting our next beautiful child. I have three daughters who need their dad healthy, present, and providing. As a Jewish man, family is everything to me. I can't risk leaving them early because I ignored the signs. I want to watch them grow, succeed, and build their lives—with me right there.
So, this is it. No more excuses. I'm going back to what worked—that low-carb, no-sugar way of eating that made me feel invincible. Eggs, meat, veggies, fruits, nuts. Minimal carbs. Strict again.

But this time, I'm doing it smarter:

This morning after the reading, I took my meds and ate fish with very little yellow rice—easing in while staying mindful. From here on, full commitment.
