You know how sometimes you just live with stuff right? Like a tree in your yard, it's just there. You don't really look at it. Just background noise you know? That was totally this tree we had.
For ages it was just... a tree. Green leaves some birds whatever. Never really gave it a second thought. Definitely did not think it was hiding anything yummy.
Then, one sunny day something little and colorful caught my eye. Up in the leaves, there were these tiny long fruits. Some were green still blending in. But a bunch were bright red, and some were even super dark almost black.
My first thought? "What the heck are those?" They looked kinda like berries but different from what you see in the store. I got closer and BAM! It hit me mulberries!
I swear i actually gasped. Mulberries! I'd only ever seen pictures or heard about them for jams. And they were just... chilling in my backyard? It was wild. Like finding a secret treasure right outside my door!
A quick phone check confirmed it. Yep mulberry tree. And yep red and black ones? Totally good to eat. So, obviously i had to try one. I was kinda pumped, kinda nervous never munched on anything from this tree before. I grabbed a dark squishy one. Popped it in my mouth.
Whoa. Just... whoa. It was so good. First, this amazing sweetness then a tiny bit of tang. Super balanced. Not fake sugary just real sweet. Like a blackberry but softer juicier. I actually close my eyes for a sec. It was so sweet i was actually shocked something i had ignored for years could taste like that.
I seriously could not believe it. All this time fresh organic awesome berries were just hanging out, growing for free. It felt so wrong that we did not know! My family and friends were just as shocked when i showed them. "These are from our tree?!" they all asked eyes wide as they tried their first one. Everyone loved them!
After that day the mulberry tree was not just "the tree" anymore. It became like, a superstar. We'd check it every day to see how the fruits were doing. Watching the green ones turn red, then that deep black. So cool to see.
Now we pick them all the time gotta be careful, they stain everything! We eat them fresh right off the branch which is still the best. But we have also thrown them in yogurt on pancakes even thinking about making a little jam. So many ways to enjoy them all thanks to this quiet, sweet gift from nature right here in our own yard.
This whole thing totally changed how i see our backyard. It's not just grass and dirt anymore it's like a secret snack bar full of cool surprises. And it just goes to show sometimes the best stuff is waiting for you in the most random closest places.
