Interpreting the Bible is highly valued to all Christians and that is one of the key teaching focuses in MCGI. The bible is not any ordinary book. The Word of God is there to manipulate, correct and educate us on living a life that is pleasing to Him.
It has been so stated in the bible itself, it says; All scripture is inspired of God, and profitable to doctrine, to reproof, to correction, to instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16).
Among other things, I got to know that Bible must be read thoroughly and not on opinion basis. We are taught in MCGI that the bible explains itself. We ought to be able to compare one verse to another to ensure that we do not misinterpret the message of God.
This is in line with the Bereans who were praised since they read the Scriptures every day to verify what they were being instructed: They searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so (Acts 17:11). This makes me understand that I should not blindly accept teachings but to ensure that I consult the bible.
The other key point is that, to interpret the bible there should be a sense of humility as well as a readiness to interpret it. We are advised against relying solely on our thoughts in the bible.
Thou shalt put thine hand unto the LORD; and lean not upon thy own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). I might not see the truth when I read the bible with pride but when I read it with humility God grants me understanding.
The bible is not only to be read but also obeyed. It is not sufficient to know the Bible and not to practice it. According to Scripture, the Scripture records that, be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourself with your own selves (James 1:22). This is reminding me that to really be understood is to have a reflection of how I live my life daily, how I talk and how I relate with other people.
Lastly, Jesus himself urged people to read the Scriptures as they will take them to the eternity. He said, Search the scriptures; ye think ye have eternal life: they are they which testify of me ( John 5:39).
This is because I am learning not only to acquire knowledge but to develop spiritually and become a better servant of God as I continue to study the Bible.
Conclusively, interpreting the bible is a process of a lifetime. It is through a close reading, humbleness, and obedience that the Word of God comes out better and more significant in our lives.
