When it comes to Back to Basics ruleset in Modern and high mana battles my go to summoner is Nidhoggr. This summoner removes one armor and one health from the opponents which is important and on top of that it gives three monsters on my team the ability to have blast damage as well as deathblow ability which gives the monsters with this ability double the damage if the target is the last remaining monster on the opponent team.
Nidhoggr also has a second set of abilities that is plus two speed and execute to two of the monsters on your team. I find this mode effective against rulesets or summoners that give opponent blast shield.
In addition to using Nidhoggr as a summoner, my strategy for this battle where we have Back to Basics, Target practice and Up to Eleven rulesets in effect was to place the biggest damage dealers in the back and in front I am placing units with a lot of health and damage.
Even with sixty seven mana available I had to be careful with my units so I was able to place a one mana tank Halfling Refugee in the first position:
This unit has a negative ability: Weary where at the start of the round one it has a ten percent chance to become Exhausted where it skips a turn and cannot retaliate.
In a Back to Basics ruleset this negative ability is not in play so this is a great tank with five melee damage, eight health and three speed for just one mana. Negative ability units usually come with great basic stats so they are very good choice to use in the Back to Basics ruleset.
In the second position I placed another unit with a negative ability: Zyrx the Emberglace. Zyrx has a negative ability Incendiary. This is when starting in round two it gets burning that has a 33% chance of spreading to the adjacent units. Obviously in a Back to Basics ruleset this is not a concern.
This is a big mana unit of ten mana, but it also comes with some big specs of seven shield, ten health points, four speed and two magic damage as well as five melee damage. I actually like this monster even without the Back to Basics ruleset as it has a blood lust and execute abilities which pair really well with the Nidhoggr summoner.
In the third position I placed a nice meat shield monster Janni Rebel and she comes with a high health points of twelve, three speed and three magic damage for nine mana. And we are up to twenty mana total for these three monsters.
In the fourth position we have our first major damage dealer that I have give the splash damage ability: Night Reaper. For eleven mana it has four magic damage, two shield and ten health points with four speed.
Next I have a new Conclave Arcana reward card that I managed to max out: Mindless Thrall. This neutral monster comes with four magic damage, seven health points and five speed for a relatively modest eight mana. And in terms of mana we are now up to thirty nine mana.
And last, but not least is our behemoth sixteen mana Rage monster. This legendary dragon card comes with five magic damage, five shield and four speed as well as eleven health points. This is our biggest magic damage dealer so I am hiding it in the very back.
My opponent DeJota piloted by the scholar LLobre93 chose to play the same summoner Nidhoggr, but a completely different monster lineup, lets see how it is going to work out for him...
DeJota started really fast delivering a lot of deadly blows to my Zyrx that took him out before he could even strike, however after that my slower but powerful monsters took over and at the start of the second round it looks like we are in a better position:
The second round started once again with DeJota firing first, however that didn't help him as my major damage dealers delivered their deadly blows and took the scholar piloted team in the second round with three of my monsters still standing:
Important victory over a higher ranked opponent as I battle it out in Modern Champion 2 and getting over twenty three SPS and 1,698 Glint tokens for this win:
