U.S. President Donald Trump presented President Lee Jae-myung with the 'Golden Key to the White House'.
Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik unveiled the "Golden Key to the White House" presented by President Trump to President Lee on Facebook this afternoon (24th).
Chief Kang said, "President Trump sent special greetings to President Lee Jae-myung at the time of the December 16th meeting between U.S. President Trump and our ambassador to the U.S.," adding, "[President Trump] likes President Lee a lot and mentioned that the best cooperative relationship between the two leaders has been formed." "(President Trump) received a very precious gift during his visit to Korea in October and said he wanted to deliver a special gift," adding, "He sent the last one of the five gold keys of the White House to our president." President Lee presented a model of the "Silla Gold Crown" to President Trump, who visited Gyeongju to attend the APEC summit.
The golden key is inscribed with the words "KEY TO THE WHITE HOUSE." Currently, the owners of the golden key are Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo. President Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, also introduced an anecdote in his memoir that Trump gave Netanyahu the key and said, "Even after I leave office, I will let you inside if you show me the key at the front door of the White House."
"I hope this golden key gift, which has a special meaning, will be a symbol of strong Korea-U.S. relations," Kang said. "We will continue to create a strong future for the Korea-U.S. alliance."
