It has been two weeks since I last posted in this community, and each time I ask myself why, the answer remains the same: the need to be perfect. To be fair, I haven't had enough time to draw or colour anything lately, and I kept feeling that if I rushed the whole process, I would end up with something far from satisfactory.
That changed this evening because I decided to draw and colour without worrying about time. So today, I am sharing a simple flower vase drawing + colouring that I made for the Hive Learners #creative-sunday campaign.
Materials Used:
Sketchbook

Drawing pencil and sharpener

Black ink pen

Set of colouring pencils

Process
The first thing I did was sketch out the flower vase in full form. I made the sketch in one go, and that helped make the other parts easier to draw.

Next, I drew a single stalk with two flowers and extended the stalk downwards into the vase.

After that, I added another stalk and some leaves to make the vase look fuller. I drew them in such a way that they curved at the top and branched out toward the sides.

Then, I started the main colouring process. I used a brown colouring pencil for the middle part of the vase and a darker shade for the top and the bottom.

Afterwards, I coloured the leaves with a green pencil, one of the flowers with purple and yellow pencils, and finally shaded the stalks with the same green pencil.

Final look

I finished the piece by outlining the entire drawing with a black ink pen. This made the artwork look more pronounced and pleasing to look at. I also added my name as a watermark to wrap it up.
I really enjoyed creating this artwork because it reminded me that I am not limited by time. I can draw at any time of the day, with or without natural light, and still expect a good outcome. The process photos from start to finish may not be as neat or well arranged as usual, but they motivate me to keep practising and improving.
This artwork was inspired by one of the old, weathered flower vases outside my home, and I thought it would be lovely to recreate it with a few added features. I hope you like it just as much as I do.
