There is a lot to be said for NOT being an expert or in any way proficient in the operations and delivery side of your business.
This way you are compelled to work ON, rather than IN your business.
Take the example of the restauranter entrepreneur who can't cook: there is no way that this entrepreneur can find themselves caught in the kitchen cooking the meals i.e. working IN the business. They MUST employ a competent chef if they are to have any chance of running a successful business. This entrepreneur's lack of operational skills requires them to recruit a team to carry out the operational side of the business.
This turns what might otherwise be considered to be a disadvantage into an advantage: the entrepreneur can now focus on the leadership of the business. Leadership is the role of the entrepreneur.Professionals like accountants, lawyers etc and consultants tend to suffer most in this regard. They can actually do more harm to the long-term growth of their business by virtue of possessing the necessary skills to DO the work. This seems to be a bit of a paradox. But if some client work needs to be done, it is all too easy for the qualified professional or competent consultant to step in and DO it. Most professionals "can cook" figuratively within their own business. This is unfortunate in regards to growing the business as they default to working IN rather than ON their business.
I have experienced this personally as a qualified accountant. It is all too easy for me to do the client work at the expense of building my tax & accountancy firm. This is not good for the long-term growth of my business. I advise my clients against being "one-man-bands" (in most cases) so need to eat my own dogfood.
So if you spot an opportunity for a new business or offering, do not be put off by the fact that you do not possess the relevant technical or operational skills. There are a ton of highly skilled people out there who can do the work.
Your job as the entrepreneur is to paint the vision of the future and to provide leadership to your growing team.
