Despite the fact that the ACLU never really believed in the 2nd or 5th amendment very seriously, its work on the 1st and 4th was good enough for me to still support its mission. Now that they've given up on the 1st, or at least a core part of it anyway, I can no long justify supporting them. The bad now outweighs the good.
It's a very sad day for one of our most treasured and important rights when the organization who has long defended it has now abandoned it in the name of what? Continuing to keep its progressive donors it would appear.
Sad that the Bill of Rights turns out to be the sacrificial lamb so that Team Blue can indulge their resentment and feel good about themselves in the process.
Alternative timeline: what if more libertarians and reasonable conservatives had recognized the good work the ACLU had done for many years and donated bigger dollars to them? Probably wouldn't be enough to outweigh the progressives, but the fact that so few of us did (I have, btw, donated to them in the past) surely didn't help matters. Yeah, they were far from perfect, but they were still the best game in town for a good long time.
