While taking my morning walk, I listened to this interview with Michio Kaku on what he believes to be the three stages of human consciousness. What struck me about his ideas is that the third stage of human consciousness, the one that he thinks separates humans from all other animals, is the ability to visualize and predict the future, or at least its various possibilities. This third stage of consciousness, he claims, comes from the development of the pre-frontal cortex.
What struck me specifically about his theory is the way it seems to suggest, much like adherents to the New Thought Movement do, as well as many self-development that there are various laws which allow us to manifest that which we desire (think Law of Attraction). You see, I have been caught up in this idea of self manifestation for the past three or four months. I’m not sure how I stumbled upon it exactly, but I have, and I’ve found the ideas very motivating.
It’s not so much the idea that we can manifest our future that attracts me, although of course I do take comfort in that, it’s the realistic (and sometimes odd and maybe not so realistic) ways that many of the self-development speakers I have been listening to break down the way that we can develop habits that will alter our brains (for better or worse), and the ways in which our brains then create feedback loops that then create more of the same results (again, for better or worse).
Kaku’s ideas in this interview seem to support a lot of the things I have been hearing about regarding the possibilities of manifestation and autosuggestion, ideas that state you can, to an extent, and with continuous effort, create your own life and environment through choice and imagination.
I found this talk very interesting. Give it a listen and see what you think.
Oh yeah, as for exercise, I ran for three miles in the evening and walked in the morning.
