Hello everyone :-). I had an awesome day today I was able to after 25 years of waiting checkout lake Margaret and the 105 year old hydroelectric power system. Built by the Mt Lyell Mining and Railway company that was one of the largest and wealthiest mining operations in the country. Wood fired furnaces had taken a lot of the forests for fuel. So they built this power station starting in 1911 to provide a reliable power supply for the mine and the town.
Located near Queenstown on the west coast of Tasmania Australia. A couple of friends and myself drove out to the power station to meet up with a worker there that had to do his checks of the power station and water pipes etc. This was prearranged weeks ago so we could get a lift in the 4WD to climb up about 600m of very steep and twisty gravel road.
The power station and the 4WD.
We did the 2.2klm one way walk from the end of the 4WD track to lake Margaret that feeds the power station water.
This is were the 4WD track starts and you can see the grey frame with yellow guards that is on rails that can be winch up to the top for inspecting the down pipe and also take items up the hill.
More to show you tomorrow.
