On our last full day in Las Vegas, a spur of the moment Uber to downtown where we hadn’t planned to go. We first went to The Neon Museum just north of downtown. Lots of old neon and lightbulb signs from days gone by. Famous casinos like the Sahara, Stardust, and Golden Nugget, but also lesser-known casinos as well as motels, bars, and even a used car lot. At night, 14 of them are lit, but those are the only ones so far fully restored. So pluses and minuses going daytime versus at night.
Later walked down to Fremont Street and found an Irish pub for a couple of well-deserved Guinness Extra Stouts on tap. Then east to Container Park where my wife did some shopping while I put a Fat Tire ale out of its misery. Excellent burritos at Pinches Tacos (“Real Mexican Food By Real Mexicans”) where they also serve wicked blood orange margaritas. Notice a pattern?
Then back west on Fremont so my wife could play some slots. I much prefer poker but basically never play while drinking. But, what the hell, last evening in Vegas. But I played it safe by getting in a tiny 2/4 limit game where if you’re even remotely competent it’s hard to get into too much trouble. One player seemed to be playing poker for maybe only the second time ever and slowed the game down until losing $60 and leaving, most of the other players were somewhere in the bad to mediocre range. Even after having four drinks, it was not hard to win $13 over the course of an hour. But don’t try this at home.
Downtown Vegas is very different from the Strip. Much more old-school. No poker tomorrow. Gotta head out to the airport for the flight home.
