Was listening to a radio show here in Canada about safe injection sites and trials for pharmaceutical grade heroin in Vancouver. Heard about people who went through a program of receiving the heroin for free and it really helped the people out who were enrolled. The risk of contamination was taken away, if they overdose at the site there is help there to bring them back to life. People on the street have to hustle to get their daily dose so this program took that struggle away. The man I heard on the radio said he had more time in the day and felt he had a life for the first time.
Unfortunately the trials only lasted over a year and so it makes it really hard for them. The man on the radio said even the trial changed his life and he even got a job. The government scrapped the program over stigmatising addicts, saying we should not give them the drug they are addicted to. That is so sad and such bogus rhetoric. I would like to see the policy for pharmaceutical grade heroin be available for all people who need it.
I have seen a few eye opening documentaries on Vancouvers downtown east side. I agree with safe injection sites and pharma grade drugs cause some people try to hurt/kill users on the street by putting poison in the drugs. The epidemic of drug overdose is brutal in todays times. We all know about fentanyl and the dangers of opioid addiction. People need help, community support and to know they are cared about as human beings. That's what these safe injection sites do. It's a good start. Time for the rest of the Americas and the world to catch on. I am in Alberta and many people are dying. I hope they have safe sites and clean drugs for the people here too. I can be an activist for it. I have a family member who was homeless but not an addict. All the same everyone deserves to be treated like a human humanely.
