I live in a small garage-turned-apartment. I am here with my girlfriend of four years, our 2 year old Rottweiler/something or other mix and our two mice. Considering I'm a self-proclaimed "borderline hoarder", and my girlfriend has plenty of things of her own, we have very limited space.
We share a car. Recently she was away for a few days, visiting her parents, leaving me carless and bored at home. (It should be noted that it was during this time that I discovered Steemit.)
Anyway, while sitting on my couch one, I got a notification on my phone that my friend had sent me a link titled "Adam Sandler" with a picture of a cat (a rather cute cat too). I'm not a huge cat person, partially because of the nightmare cat I once had; (Her name was Paul, and I'll do a story on her at some point) but this cat was up for adoption seemed to be calling my name.
It took me a minute to realize that the cat actually was local. At first I thought this was just a random Humane Society post he had found, and shared it with me because, well, Adam Sandler. But no, the cat was real and the cat was local. I called the Humane Society but, of course, they won't really give you much information on the phone, if you can even get them on the phone.
Now, I had to admit I've dealt with some guilt since. Without a car, I put it off until my girlfriend got back out of pure laziness. Adam Sandler is now gone, and it breaks my heart. Isn't there some saying about "better to have loved and lost.." or whatever?
All joking about my love of Adam Sandler aside, the even did spark my interest in adopting another pet, as I think everyone should consider. I read a statistic recently that said there are twice as many dogs given homes from breeders than there are from shelters. I'm not sure what year the statistic was examining, as I can't find it now, but I'm sure the numbers are similar.
The number of animals being adopted from shelters represents about half of the animals being dropped off there; leaving millions of animals to be euthanized in the USA alone. These animals need your help!
Shelters are not the only places you can find your new friends too. Everywhere, there are people who can no longer take care of their furry friends, and for a new home for them. Act on it! A lot of these animals end up abandoned in hopes they will find someone/someone will find them, because adoption attempts failed.
Please help our four legged friends. Find the closest dog and look deep in their eyes and ask yourself; They'd do it for you, wouldn't they?
