South Korean implemented a PASS Smartphone based drivers license that is backed by a blockchain. Put in effect September 2019 by the Ministry of Science and ICT, there are already 1 million drivers using digital licenses.
Australia is also in the middle of transitioning to blockchain based digital licenses. While I am not sure what blockchain South Korea is using, it looks like Australia is using the Ethereum blockchain.
These blockchain licenses act as legal IDs for identification similar to physical plastic licenses. The PASS system has already been accepted by commercial organizations as a valid proof of age for buying liqueur with more businesses integrating it into their systems.
I am not an anarchist by any means, I know the government sucks but I don't have the delusion they are going to step down or dissolve. That being said, I really don't feel comfortable with a government issued app running on my phone. They have proven time and time again that privacy is of no importance to them.
There was an old cartoon when there was talks about Apple being forced to give the NSA and FBI backdoors on their devices and it scares the shit out of me.
I imagine in due time we will have no choice in the matter, if you want to drive or drink you will need to opt into using their software on your mobile device. As technology becomes more central to our way of life, it is going to be unavoidable like it or not.
