Colorado Waters
On the tip from a local resident, we drove away from civilization is the search for hot springs. These hot springs are called "penny pots".
The idea of a penny pot is a handcrafted hot tub built into the river. As the hot springs flow down into the river some locals have moved the rocks around to form little dams. The dams slow the flow of the hot water, and the cold river water. Where the two waters meet is the perfect temperature for a hot tub style soak.
To soak at a hot spring in town it would have cost us a good bit of money. The beauty of the penny pots is that they are free, out in nature, and not crowded.
It wasn't too long of a drive before we started seeing signs of places to pull off of the road. The first spot was breath taking. The water was winding through the hills, passed a little house, and over some large rocks. It wasn't a hot spring, but it was water!
The water was too nice, and it was calling to me. I had to rip off my shoes and get my toes in. I managed to keep my feet in for about 10 seconds. Once I pulled my feet out...they got even colder. I couldn't help myself so I tried a few more times...still only a few seconds.
After I froze my toes off it was time to hit the road some more. It was only a few more miles before we found the penny pots.
There were a few people soaking when we got there, and it was looking awesome. With the help of our little trailer we all managed to get changed and into the water.
I cannot believe how hot the water was! The river was as cold as ice, and the springs were too hot to even touch. Where the two met in the penny pot...it was perfect.
I feel absolutely blessed that I have had the opportunity to soak in a Rocky Mountain hot spring.
Thanks for coming along on our adventure. We are currently just over 7,000 miles. The journey is still ahead!
