An island paradise
Koh Chang (meaning 'Elephant Island' translated), is one of the larger Thai islands yet lesser saturated tourism-wise than it's relatives further down and west of the Gulf of Thailand such as Koh Samui. A mountainous, looming island full of hills and jungle and incredible beaches. This trip was a few years ago (2-3 years pre-pandemic). However, you can expect things to still look pretty much the same.
Above: View from the hill near where I stayed, the accommodation is below which we shall see in a moment. This bay is very idyllic and sheltered, I took a kayak out on it one day I was here and paddled to the other side and back.
Whilst walking in the jungle, we chanced upon a large number of these amazing little butterflies with emerald green coloration.
I captured shots of this boy who climbs the coconut tree to retrieve the fruits with zero ropes just bare hands and feet. Absolutely crazy how he just goes up and down it like a ladder, 50 feet up.
Chic details around the resort where I stayed.
A close up of the boy in doing his work in the coconut tree. They must be harvested promptly so to not make a mess of some hapless hotel guest below. (That's actually true, they are lethal - always watch out if you are strolling on a beach with coconut trees above your head).
The view across the bay, it is at the south end of the island. Around dusk.
This is the outdoor lounging area on the waterfront. This resort had very chic Thai traditional look with excellent hospitality. I hope to return one day!
Pot plant at the resort
An ever nicer view out of the bay with I think maybe Koh Mak in the far distance.
The views speak for themselves. Something timeless.
This is the view from the room! Nice hammocks and swing benches to while away the time enjoying the spectacular views.
The car ferry which transported my companion and I to and from the island.
Meanwhile on the mainland, you can also find some really spectacular spots. Here beach massage and lunch under ancient trees - note the cloth wraps by Buddhist monks. It means this tree is considered sacred and to be protected.
You'll never tire of the views, and pristine waters. Emerald greens and blues all the way.
Late afternoon sun picks out the color of the shutters on this house, which appears to be built out in the water there by a fishing family (perhaps).
At a Greek restaurant. If it's still there I highly recommend it! On Bang Bao pier.
Looking out across the bay, another fine day. Big bird in the blue sky. The water is so flat and peaceful, no jet skis or anything!
It'd be great to explore a lot more of Koh Chang than this brief weekend trip I had 5 years ago to just a small corner! It's truly an epic place to adventure. Hope to make it there soon :)
