Review of Mavic 2 Pro and Epson Moverio FPV glasses. Had these on order for a while and just came in with the shipping delays. Got the BT-35e Epson Moverio FPV glasses today. Initial review: Overall, Thumbs up. Worked great with the DJI Smart Controller and HDMI cable. Best way I can describe view is looks like a 65" television screen floating about 6-8 ft away in front of you. Picture was very clear and well defined. It actually seemed bigger than the view of the DJI Goggles RE, maybe because of the distance, but feel is just bigger. Huge plus is being able to maintain Line of Sight (within distance limits) while using.
I was happy because I finally got my distance FPV back after fighting the DJI goggles RE and giving up. The DJI Goggles RE were constantly losing signal within 800 feet, even in the open. What a great experience again to use these. Flew over 11K feet from behind hill in wooded area before starting to lose signal, which is normal controller loss in this location. Obviously not dependent on the glasses since it is just a HDMI signal feed vs actually communicating with the drone directly.
I wear bi-focals, and picture was good for me without my glasses, with menu items just a little blurry. I was able to wear my glasses under the glasses with ease and clear the menus. I initially thought I would need reading glasses underneath, with the DJI goggles, I had to buy the 3x diopters. I tried 3x reading glasses and it was super blurry, went back to my prescription glasses and was great. I guess because of the distance it appears to be projected, it also looks farther away in the glasses.
Overall Experience was not as immersive as the DJI goggles, but maybe that's a good thing. I had no problems getting off-balance or dizzy because the peripheral vision was still there, and could easily look above or below the glasses at the controller or into the sky at the drone. Picture was decent brightness, but definitely needed the shades when flying in bright sunlight. I will likely always use the shades in front, unless maybe at night or dusk.
Taking photos that are properly framed was my primary reason for using FPV. I really enjoyed this capability in the DJI goggles. I lined up a few items to see how what appeared in the screen would show up cropped or not in actual pictures later. I was VERY pleasantly surprised to see the left/right and bottom virtually perfectly aligned with maybe a little extra in the picture at the top, I will need to do some additional testing on the top, but the other three virtually identical to what I had aligned in the glasses view.
Sound: I missed the sound from alerts and such. It has an earphone jack that I didn't test. Bluetooth speaker and/or a built in speaker would be nice to avoid the earphone and yet another wire.
I was able to connect both computers via HDMI easily and effortlessly, although the high resolution settings I have made the text a little too small for my eyes and glasses. I will do additional future testing on different resolutions, I think a little lower resolution and large text size may be very useful.
I did not test the 3D capabilities or functions.
Caveats: The promised USB-C display connection did not work for my Pixel 4 XL or Pixel 3XL phones. I was hoping to view movies from my phone on upcoming flights but it appears their current android phone support is very limited and listed as older android versions, phones, and tablets for now. I opened a support ticket, we'll see what they say.
Folks with other DJI or different drones may need to look at the BT-300 model, which includes a controller that basically replaces your cellphone in the controller and then connects to the glasses via cable. I've seen some good videos and reviews on that model. Be sure to check what your output capabilities are from your controller before choosing a model.
Recommendations: Some type of focus capability for those with different eyes would be really really nice. Wireless earphone capability would be nice.
More drone pics coming soon!
