What is the true meaning of the name “Africa”?
Contrary to some belief systems, the name “Africa” is a portmanteau of two terms {Afri and -ica).
“Afri” came from the name of a tribe in Ancient North Africa (present day Tunisia) known as the Afri tribe. Then, “-ica “ is just a suffix to represent “…land of”. The term “Africa” was first used during the roman invasion to represent the land where the Afri tribes inhabited. That was the origin of the term “Africa”
Why then are we meant to believe that Africa means “Dark continent” or Land of the black?
This impression was created by the Europeans in the pre-colonial times. Because they had minimal knowledge of the vast land they discovered; Terra Incognito (Unknown land), they named it “Dark Continent”. But this impression does not define who we truly are.
Our Land, Our heritage
It is not an error to say that Africans are “Over-pampered” by God. Apart from the fact that the trail of civilization was blazed in Africa; Africa is also the home to “mother-nature”. You won’t probably understand this if you’re not an African. The natural resources in this continent are almost infinite.
We Africans need to unite in one spirit and champion a revival that will herald the revamping of the great continent called “Africa”. Let the world know I said it.
God bless Africa.
