Introduction
After the unsuccessful first attempt, the second try of the #1 round for the Age of Empires 2 - worked out way better.
Earlier today I played against , my opponent in the semifinals of the tournament. Let’s see who could handle the Celts better.
Game 1 - Highlands
According to the rules, the first game was played on the map Highlands - an open area with lots of wood and the possibility of rivers.
It turned out we had one in the middle, so I decided to wall up the crossing and go for some ships. did the same thing but was a little bit slower – fortunately for me.
Since there was no way through the middle and I had control of the river, I decided to sneak in some archers with a transport ship and attack from behind enemy lines.
This actually set me up for the win. After I had killed some villagers plus his army, I decided to make an ultimate push by placing a castle directly in his base.
Immediately after the castle was built, called it “gg” (= good game) and resigned – so it was 1-0 for me.
Game 2 – Black Forest
For the second game, we had to play on the map Black Forest - this is why the setting “Explored” was used. I realized that I had an easy wall-able map and therefore I went straight for walling – a strategy that had turned out in my favor the first game. Never change a running system if you don’t have to.
Unfortunately, I had struggles in the early game and lost two villagers to boar.
Therefore I of course was slower than my opponent who used his lead to quickly tower the middle before I could build up my own tower.
What followed was a tough tower war which I ultimately could win. But when moving forward I realized why I won - had taken some time and built up a castle.
So once again he had an advantage over me.
I needed to take a huge risk and sacrificed many villagers in order to get up a castle myself.
Eventually this turned out to be the right strategy. After I had the castle up, I made an army of petards and destroyed castle with them.
This really was the turning point in my favor. After bombing his castle down I spammed the Celt's unique unite, the Woad Raider, which took down his economy and made him call it "gg" again.
So the match ended 2-0 in my favor - "good game" once again . After this really close second game I was happy to have won. Honestly, in the middle of the game I was sure I would loose. But I risked it all with my own castle and it was worth it.
Now I am excited to see who wins between and
and will face me in the final games.
