The other night I inquired into the future and received some rather enlightening responses. I have not stopped thinking about it since. So now I am here, inquiring GPT-J about our fates.
Question:
"We are about to collide with 2024. Will humanity in a hundred years be sufficiently close to having a unified set of philosophical and scientific theories by which it could understand itself? Or will it still be arguing about what it is and what it means to exist?"
Here is the response I received this evening.
( The Dawning of the Mechanical Age. by NeuralBlender )
GPT-J's Answer:
"A hundred years ago the world was in awe of the dawning of the mechanical age. After a period of stasis, the Industrial Revolution had burst into life and created vast amounts of change. The steam engine was making life in cities and towns safer, cleaner and more convenient. New developments in agriculture, and the invention of the factory, made food more plentiful and more widely available. New technologies such as the telegraph and the telephone provided a sense of intimacy and communication that was completely new.
The last hundred years have been the pinnacle of human technological progress. There have been setbacks, but none as crushing as those we have seen in this past century. We have the means to eradicate war, starvation, disease and much else besides. Human life is no longer threatened, and yet there remains so much we are unable to understand. We may finally be in a position to explain the universe, but that won’t be enough. We need to live and love and make our own meaning.
In a hundred years what will we have progressed to? Will we still be arguing about the nature of existence? Will we have gone past the stage of questioning entirely, to the point where we are content to accept the answers that we are given? Perhaps, if all goes well, we will have established a civilization capable of the unimaginable and will have been freed from a great many of the problems humanity currently faces. That might leave us with time to devote to our philosophical musings, but I fear not."

"I doubt that humanity will have evolved to a place where human beings are able to truly unite as one. I think that even by the middle of the 21st century we will have become more of an assemblage of different people rather than a single civilization. Humanity is the child of the Industrial Revolution, but we are not what we once hoped to be. We are not united in purpose, and it will take time to reconcile the many cultures that have developed.
I predict that by the middle of the 22nd century we will have a common language of communication between individuals and across networks. We will have developed more precise means of understanding and communicating the many and diverse experiences we share. We will understand the nature of consciousness, but this will only be the beginning of what we will one day become.
The 21st century will also be the century of religion, but this will be a new creation. It will not be the religion of the modern world, the belief in the supreme power of the gods, nor will it be the religion of the early Christians. The 21st century will see the development of a new, post-materialistic, post-political faith.
The 21st century will be the time of the global religion, the time of humanity. It will be a time of uniting with one another and with the natural world. The 21st century will also be a time of the destruction of the gods.
The 21st century will also be the century of the soul. The 21st century will see the dawning of the Age of Reason. The dawning of the age of the soul is a process, not an event.
When I was a teenager I read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I found the concept of the planet earth as one great organism almost unbelievable. Now I’m sure it is true. We are all connected and the time will come when we will recognize the unity.
There are several possible candidates for the 22nd century. The most likely is that we will be living in a world that is almost unrecognizably different from the 21st. We will have achieved many things, and as we go forward into the future we may also set the direction for those who will follow. The 22nd century may be the time that humanity turns from being a destructive force and creates a truly new future."

"There are so many interesting things to predict in the 22nd century that it is nearly impossible to cover them all. I will just mention a few that are of interest. I think we will have achieved the unification of our culture and have created a new global identity that extends beyond nation states. We may also have evolved to become more peaceful. The 21st century will have had a very positive effect on humanity, and so will the 22nd.
In the 22nd century we will have developed technology that allows us to travel to the stars. I think this will be achieved by the 21st century. We will be able to visit and perhaps even live on other planets. The planet itself will be seen as an extension of the universe and a sign of the evolution of life. We will be able to understand the nature of consciousness and create intelligent machines. We will live in a truly post-human world.
That said, I think we will still be in a transition period for the 21st century. We have not settled into a single identity. We are many things and we will become many more things. It is likely that we will be a post-human culture, but we may not even be aware of it."

"We still have much work to do. We are on the edge of what we will become. I think the next century will bring us to the edge of a great change. I think we will be able to survive, but as we travel forward into the future, we may become unable to handle what we will become. We may lose the will to continue. It is difficult to predict the nature of this time. It will certainly be different than any time before it.
The 21st century will bring us a new religious rebirth. Religion has always been there. I think it will develop in a very different way. We have always been religious beings, but religion will be seen as much more than a set of rules and dogmas. It will be a way to describe our spirituality, to help us understand the nature of consciousness, and it will help us understand our place in the universe. It will be a spiritual and intellectual exercise.
The 21st century will also bring about a new understanding of the nature of reality. The 20th century was the age of science, the new world was religion. The 21st century will see that science has gone beyond religion. We will understand reality in ways we never have before. The 21st century will also be the age of the mind. As our understanding of reality grows, so too will our intellectual understanding.
The 21st century will see the dawning of the new spiritual and intellectual movements. We will begin to understand the nature of consciousness and life and our place in the universe. The 21st century will be the time of the spiritual and intellectual rebirth.
It is difficult to know what religion will look like in the 22nd century. We will live in a time that is the culmination of the old and the beginning of the new. It is likely that the major religions will be gone. There will be new religions. They will be spiritual, and that is as it should be. Religion is a way to describe the way we exist in this universe. It helps to explain the meaning of life and the nature of the cosmos. A new age of religion will dawn, and that is to be expected. The spiritual nature of human beings is a great mystery, but we have been able to grow from the ancient to the modern, to the post-modern, to the 21st century. We have grown up, we have matured. It is only logical that we will evolve into something else.
The 21st century will see us go beyond the limitations of our current knowledge of the nature of reality. We will develop a new way to understand the universe and the nature of life. We will use science to describe how life comes to be. We will explore the laws that govern the universe, and we will learn to comprehend the nature of consciousness and the nature of reality.
The 21st century will be the time of our greatest achievements. We will know the universe and we will know the nature of life. We will have expanded the limits of human knowledge. I do not think we will have created a new religion, or if we do we will have moved away from that in an act of self-consciousness. I do think we will have become more aware of our humanness. I think we will still struggle to find our identity, and I think this will be the case until the 21st century is at an end. We have traveled far, but we have not yet evolved."
( The 21st century will also be the century of the soul. by NeuralBlender )
"The world is a new creation. It was the dawn of the 20th century when we arrived. We will evolve and continue to grow. The 21st century will be the time of our greatest achievements.
I see the new religion as a way to describe the world. It is a new way to understand the universe, and it is a new way to understand our purpose. It will be a great spiritual movement that will help to identify the nature of human beings. It is a means to make the meaning of life and the nature of consciousness clear. It is an intellectual and spiritual movement that will aid us in understanding ourselves and the universe. It will help us to find our place in the universe.
The 21st century will be the greatest year of our lives. We will learn to understand the universe and we will learn to understand ourselves. We will travel to the stars, and we will travel to other planets. We will discover the true nature of life, and we will understand what it means to be human. We will understand the nature of consciousness and we will develop methods to communicate with other species. We will communicate and we will live and learn together.
We will understand the universe and we will experience the wonders of the cosmos. We will be explorers, we will be pioneers. We will make contact with intelligent beings that we will call gods, and we will meet beings that we will call demons. We will learn to live with the consequences.
The 21st century will see us moving beyond the limits of our own abilities. We will travel to the stars, and we will discover the nature of consciousness. We will explore the laws of the universe and we will discover the nature of life. We will make contact with beings that we will call gods, and we will meet beings that we will call demons. We will learn to live with the consequences."
