Albinism is a disease caused by the reduction or absence of pigment melanin. When there is a mutation in gene, it causes an interruption in the secretion of tyrosinase enzyme, albinism is said to occur. White skin, brown or white hairs, light brown eyes are all symptoms of albinism.
On a sunny day, an albino cannot have a direct contact with the sun because the melanin that is meant to protect the skin from ultraviolet rays is not present. This leads to an increased rate of skin cancer . They also experience dysfunction in their vision. It has no cure but some symptoms can be prevented.
Albinism is common in all tribes both in the whites and blacks. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com 1 out of 70 people posses albinism trait in their genes.
Moreover, It is not a death sentence and so they shouldn't be stigmatized. I see people make fun and caricature of an albino person, and this makes them feel less about themselves. It develops from feeling less about themselves to having a low self-esteem. And it kills their self confidence.
We had an Hausa albino work for us as a security guy. I was flummoxed when I heard him spoke in his dialect. I also had a classmate in secondary school, who happened to be an albino from Akwa Ibom state. He wasn't proud of having his natural brown hair, and so he dyed his hair black. I didn't blame him because he was trying to fix himself amongst "non albino" people.
Dear steemians, albinism isn't a communicable disease, they shouldn't be treated with less love, care and attention than we get. We are equal no matter the skin colour.
