A year and a half ago, when I moved to Antigua Guatemala City, I decided to take up a hobby that would reconnect me with nature; since I work on the computer almost all day.
Desde hace un año y medio, que me mude a vivir la ciudad de Antigua Guatemala, decidí tomar un hobbie que me reconectara con la naturaleza; ya que trabajo en la computadora casi todo el día.
Today, I have about 8 bonsais; it is something that has given me a lot of tranquility; it makes me go out to sunbathe for a while while while I observe and retouch them; but above all, what I have learned the most from them, are life lessons. These little trees have taught me that human beings, since we are born, go through the same process of growth as a bonsai.
Al día de hoy, tengo alrededor de 8 bonsais; es algo que me ha dado mucha tranquilidad; me hace salir a tomar el sol un rato mientras los observo y retoco; pero sobretodo, lo que más he aprendido de ellos, son lecciones de vida. Estos pequeños arbolitos me han enseñado, que los seres humanos, desde que nacemos, pasamos por el mismo proceso de crecimiento que un bonsai.
When you plant or get a small tree with the purpose of making it into a bonsai, you have to think how you want it to look in its final version; you have to see according to the type of tree, what shape you can give it; and in those shapes, then you choose the one you like best.
Cuando siembras o consigues un arbolito chiquito con el propósito de hacerlo bonsai, tienes que pensar cómo quieres que se vea en su versión final; tienes que ver según el tipo de árbol, que forma le puedes dar; y de esas formas, luego eliges la que más te gusta.
Then you have to plant the tree in a container where you can concentrate its root growth, restricting the roots that come out through small holes in the pot so that the roots grow inside the pot, in a reduced space.
Después tienes que sembrar el arbolito en un recipiente donde puedas concentrar su crecimiento de raíces, restringiendo las que se salen por pequeños orificios de la maceta para que las raíces engorden dentro de la maceta, en un espacio reducido.
Then you have to use wires, to twist the trunk, which is still flexible due to its young age, to give it the shape you had chosen; the branches that are not part of what you imagined you would cut. And so from time to time you cut and rewire; when the tree grows, the thickness of the wire you use has to be thicker; or else the tree will take its own course.
Luego tienes que usar alambres, para torcer el tronco, que todavía es flexible por su temprana edad, para darle la forma que habías elegido; las ramas que no sean parte de lo que te imaginaste las cortas. Y así cada cierto tiempo vas recortando y realambrando; cuando el arbolito va creciendo, el grosor del alambre que usas tiene que ser más grueso; o de lo contrario, el arbolito va tomar su propio rumbo.
When I began to shape mine, I was very excited; but as the days went by, and I went out to look, I didn't see much change; so I went out less and less to look at them; until one day I had completely forgotten; I saw them out of the corner of my eye as I passed through the garden; that's when I realized that the branches had already grown so much, that the wire wasn't long enough to cover them all. The branches were now growing freely.
Cuando empecé a darle forma a los míos, estaba muy entusiasmado; pero conforme iban pasando los días, y salía a ver, no veía mucho cambio; así que cada vez, salía menos días a verlos; hasta que un día que se me habían olvidado por completo; los vi de reojo al pasar por el jardín; fue cuando me di cuenta que las ramas ya se habían crecido tanto, que el alambre no era suficientemente largo para cubrirlas todas. Las ramas ahora estaban creciendo con libertad.
Looking for the light, with no fixed direction. I wasn't watering them either, and they were dry and sunburned. My bonsais were no longer the shape I wanted them to be. I was very worried, my carelessness was killing the bonsai. I had to spend about 4 hours; asking bonsais how I could rescue them, and applying their advice.
Buscando la luz, sin rumbo fijo. Como tampoco los estaba regando, además estaban secos y quemados del sol. Mis bonsais ya no tenían la forma que yo les quería dar. Estaba muy preocupado, mi descuido estaba matando a los bonsáis. Tuve que dedicarles como 4 horas; preguntándole a bonsayeros, cómo los podía rescatar, y aplicando sus consejos.
That same day, I read an article that said that children are molded in the image and likeness of the people we spend the most time with during the first 7 years. In the moment while I was reading the article; I said: this is the same as raising a bonsai; you have to strengthen its rai, so that it grows strong and healthy, watering it constantly; you have to teach it your ideals, putting wires on the branches, to give them the shape you want; and you have to put them in a place where the sun hits them but they don't burn, so that they feed themselves enough.
Ese mismo día, leí un artículo que decía que los niños son moldeados a imagen y semejanza de las personas con quien más tiempo pasamos durante los primeros 7 años. En el instante mientras leía el artículo; dije: esto es lo mismo que criar un bonsai; tienes que fortalecer sus rai, para que crezca fuerte y sano, regándolo constantemente; tienes que enseñarle tus ideales, poniéndole alambres en las ramas, para darles la forma que quieres; y tienes que ponerlos en un lugar donde les pegue el sol pero no se quemen, para que se alimentan lo suficiente.
We are a bonsai when we are small; our parents, teachers and people close to us when we are babies; they take care of us and teach us their ideals. But unlike a bonsai, we have a conscience. This is the message I want to leave you today; when we grow up enough, we no longer need to be in our parents' pot; nor do we need the wires to guide our path; nor do we need to be given water in a bottle.
Nosotros somos un bonsai cuando somos pequeños; nuestros padres, profesores y personas cercanas a nosotros cuando somos bebés; nos cuidan y nos enseñan sus ideales. Pero a diferencia de un bonsai, nosotros tenemos, conciencia. Este es el mensaje que quiero dejarles hoy; cuando crecemos lo suficientemente, ya no necesitamos estar en la maceta de nuestros padres; tampoco los alambres para guiar nuestro camino; ni que nos den el agua en biberón.
We are already aware, to decide and choose how we follow the path in search of the light; and we have our roots, which unlike those of a tree, we can move to where we need or want.
Ya somos conscientes, para decidir y elegir cómo seguimos el camino en búsqueda de la luz; y tenemos nuestras raíces, que a diferencia de las de un árbol, nos podemos mover a donde necesitemos o queramos.
Today, I want to say goodbye, but not without first creating awareness; that you take time for each action you will take for the rest of the day; that it be by your own decision, and not by old wires; that you seek the light in your path, and do not follow the path that was drawn for you; that you constantly hydrate yourself and do not let your dreams wither away; and finally, that whatever happens, if you are blocked by the light, remember that you have feet to move to wherever it is, your roots are strong enough to get out of all darkness.
Hoy, quiero despedirme, pero no sin antes, creando consciencia; que te tomes un tiempo para cada acción que tomarás por el resto del día; que sea por decisión tuya, y no de alambres viejos; a que busques la luz en tu camino, y no sigas el que te dibujaron; a que te hidrates constantemente y no dejes que tus sueños se marchiten; y finalmente, que sea lo que pase, si te tapan la luz, recuerda que tienes pies para moverte a donde quiera que esté, tus raíces son lo suficientemente fuertes para salir de toda oscuridad.
