What is QRL?

The Quantum Resistant Ledger is a public blockchain that is trying to pioneer an area that hasn't been addressed yet in cryptocurrency -- resistance to attacks from quantum computers.

QRL is still a very new cryptocurrency. The initial coin release was done spring of this year and it was released as an ERC20 token. They are still running on test net but after the Genesis block is mined on mainnet this fall they will be exchanging 1:1 for their solo token.

From my understanding, the potential problem is the current transaction security of crytpocurrency. When you send a transaction it creates a digital signature. This signature exposes the public key, and as of the end of 2016, half of the Bitcoin ledger balance was held in addresses with exposed public keys. With our current computers trying to force your way into hacking the blockchain would take years, but the theoretical quantum computers could be exponentially faster and more powerful than what we have now.

The rise of quantum computers could happen in a public light and Bitcoin and other cryptos could adapt and there would be no problem. But not every computer genius is open and share their hacking methods, so QRL is stepping it up before the problem arises.

I'd like to note that, as white papers go, this was the most amazingly difficult one I have every read. I'm pretty sure I had two seizures and half an aneurysm. I'm not a maths guy. I'm barely a computer guy. They made me feel confident for the first few minutes and then the next half hour was tormenting...
