This is the reason I didn't even know what freedom even is until I found out on my own.
I remember growing up and my mother would actively avoid conversation even with me. I guess the point was that she didn't want to sway me, but the way kids learn and explore ideas is through conversations with critical thinking. I know this sounds bad, but I'm pretty sure I had more critical thinking skill than they did. It seems that is was just a cultural thing. Old folks from my family were super into obeying and believing in authority. Any authority from government to health care to media were to be believed and submitted to.
Now that I have my own family, no discussion is off the table. No discussion seems uncomfortable. There is no real effort to be right, it is just an effort to discuss. We all have our beliefs, but if those beliefs can't be challenged, then they aren't worth anything.
