My Bergman comparison is probably all over the place if you speak with someone who knows Bergman's work deeply; I've only seen a few films, but his way—and that of some other directors, perhaps most notably Ang Lee, e.g. in his "The Ice Storm"—to display families is quite disconcerting and horrifying while familiar.
