Caribbean monk seal. Extinct in 1952. Of the three species of monk seals that man came to know, there are only two left: the Mediterranean and the Hawaiian. The Caribbean disappeared in the middle of the last century. Its habitat extended from Florida to northern South America, and the first recorded about its sighting was written by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage (1494).
The monk seal was exterminated for its fat, its skin and as food. In addition, it was erroneously believed that they posed a great threat to the fish banks and an informal campaign was organized to put an end to it.
THANKS FOR WATCHING. :-)
