I was birding yesterday in Snohomish County, WA and while looking for an American Redstart we stopped to look at this Texas Longhorn. These were among the earliest breeds of cattle in the New World, are much more commonly seen in arid places like Texas than it western Washington where finding water is no problem. These cattle are especially able to tolerate drought. It was cool to see this cow and calf feeding.
As a vegan it was nice to see cows milk being used by a calf, not a person. Still the calf is likely to end up as steak. I tried not to think about that sad end.
