This is my entry to 's Animal Photography Contest.
This summer I was able to go to Tanzania and while I was there I went on a safari on the Serengeti and through the Ngorongoro Crater. It was an amazing experience to see these majestic animals up close. At one point during the safari, the lions were sleeping in the road and we parked right next to them. I could have opened the door and touched them, but I would have probably lost my arm in the process.
This group of lionesses that I took pictures of were in the process of hunting some zebra, but once all of the safari jeeps started coming in the area, it spooked off the zebra, so the lionesses did not have a successful hunt. It was still really cool to watch them stalk their prey and it was crazy how well they blended in with the tall grass.
We came within feet of a large group of about 20 elephant that walked past us. There was group of lions in the area when all the elephants came walking through and all of the lions got up and moved out of the way. You could tell that when the elephants are in large numbers, they don't have to worry about much.
Our driver stopped and pointed out a vulture that was up in its nest with its wings spread. He said that this was a warning to the other vultures in the area that he is claiming a kill that he sees and he is about to go and get it. I never did see what the vulture went after because after he took off, he flew pretty far off into the distance.
A safari on the Serengeti is an unforgettable experience. I am looking forward to the chance to be able to go back and spend more time with the people of Africa. I will be posting more about my time in Tanzania and living in a Masaai village for a month, so be sure to follow me if you are interested in hearing about my travels. Thank you for taking the time to read this and look through my pictures.
