Meeting local animals is a must-do for me when I visited new places. How can I miss the alpaca and llama when I visited Peru?
To be honest, I didn't know the difference between alpaca and llama before I visited Peru. I just knew roughly that a llama looks like the Mr. Llama in Japanese manga Shirokuma Cafe.😳
These fluffy guys are alpacas. They look like sheep somehow. Compared with their 'cousin', they are shorter (82 - 97 cm) and lighter (110 - 190lbs). They are even-tempered. I even got the chance to touch their heads.
You may see sweaters made of alpaca. As material, alpaca is soft, light and warm, once called the poor man's cashmere as it is comparably easier to obtain.
This guy who's eating grass is a llama. Our guide was teaching me how to feed him/her. They are taller (1.7 - 1.8m) and stronger (290 - 440lbs). Their ears are longer than alpacas, and are often described as 'banana shape'.
Beware! They are not as gentle as alpaca. They may spit on you if they are unhappy.
