Welcome back, readers! I was reading a Wikipedia page regarding the information on Gardens By the Bay and I read that the anime Plastic Memories showcased the Supertree Groves in one of the episodes. It has been a long time since I watched a sad anime in the likes of Akame Ga Kill and Anohana. There were 13 episodes in total and I watched them all in two days. The plot was beautifully building up from one episode to the last episode where it exploded.
The anime introduced me to a half machine and half human called Giftias which in essence have synthetic souls living in them. They can only last for only 9 years plus. The main character, Tsukasa, was going to his first day of work at Terminal Service One. It was a company where they retrieved the body of the Giftias which has reached the end of their lifespan. It is always emotional when going to retrieve the Giftias as they had spent their lives building connections with their owner throughout the 9 years and is very hard for the owner to let go.
Tsukasa was paired up with Isla, a Giftia. Unbeknown to Tsukasa, Isla had about three months to live and she had previously worked with Kazuki, three years earlier. A normal human like Tsukasa must observe the negotiating process between Giftias and the owner of the Giftia which is going to be retrieved. The Giftia must persuade the owner to sign the agreement form to retrieve the Giftia. Isla was seen whispering to the Giftias before ending their “life”. “I hope you can be reunited with the one you cherished”.
At first, Isla was cold towards Tsukasa and slowly they became friends and finally became lovers. It was so sad to see in the last episode that Tsukasa must end the “life” of Isla on a Ferries Wheel. This quote stuck with me from the anime. “Nothing can be happier than being the one you cherished.”
I recommend this anime to fans who love the sad, romance type. I did not cry in the last episode but I admit it was sad. I kept thinking about the scene long after I had watched the anime. I gave it 7/10! Signing off! Sejuk!
