Hey guys, sorry for not posting a lot in the last few days. The linux tutorials and other stuff isn't canceled or anything, just been busy for the last few days. But in the meantime, I've been learning how to make android apps!
The story for this app is pretty interesting. In December last year, i spent most of my time (trying to) studying for my exams.
.....Of course, like every semester, i became depressed and regretful about the fact that i had started studying so late, and that i had no chance of getting a good grade. (although i did manage to clear all my backlogs so that's great).
So to motivate myself, i would watch all the standard motivational images and youtube videos. Then one day, i was reading an article, and the author mentioned a video, and then said:
"It's so good that i wish i could watch it every morning just after getting up"
And it occurred to me that there were no alarm clock apps that did this....So i decided to make one.
Ok. To be completely honest, i have tried to learn android app development many times before. The problem was that i would get bored when just making dummy apps that are shown in the tutorial. So i would think up and some idea, start making the app. But android app development has so many idiosyncrasies, so many weird gotchas that eventually i would just give up and say:
"Well, no one is going to use your app anyway, so why bother making it? why bother banging your head?"
But somehow, i managed to complete this one (probably because i wasn't a complete beginner this time, so it was a lot less harder). I have tried making android apps on and off for at least 2 years now, but this is the first time i have something that's done, something that's actually in the store.
Well ok so what's the app?
It's basically an alarm clock that let's you show set a quote, a photo, or a youtube video that will be shown after you dismiss the alarm.
In this screenshot, you can see the various options available. If you want to let a quote be shown, you can select an included one, or you can type in your own one. If you want to see a photo everytime you wake up, you can select the "Show a Photo" option, and select an image from your gallery (i'm working on a "show top posts from r/GetMotivated/(or something else)" option). If you want to see a youtube video, you select "Play a Youtube Video", then paste the youtube link.
It's a pretty simple, pretty small app(~2MB APK size), and it uses very few permissions(no data logging).
So if you want to check it out....
If, after installing it and using it a few times, you just get a random crash message (especially if it crashes when you haven't even opened it)
It's a harmless crash. Your alarms have not been deleted, and will fire normally. Don't worry i'll fix it someday....(if i ever find the cause....)
