Meadowcroft Rock Shelter in Washington County Pennsylvania, is an Archaeological dig site, that was used as a Shelter by Paleo-indians over 16,000 years ago !!
It is believed that the Massive rock overhang was used in Ancient times by people traveling from one settlement to the next.. Since it was not used for permanent habitation.. Travelers stayed there on a very short term basis; they would have needed a place to shelter while they restocked food and provisions during their long journeys..

Below is a photo of the dig site.
Over time parts of the overhang have fallen and were removed..
This Monongahela Indian village is a recreation of a 16th Century Indian Village that centered on Agricultural life Style, as well as hunting, and fishing.. .. I was able to try my hand at the Atyl-atyl, an ancient Spear thrower..

Both ends of the posts were burnt to slow decomposition from bugs and weather..
In addition to the Rock-shelter, and the 16th century Monongahela indian village visitors to Meadowcroft can also experience Rural life over the past 500 years through a whole series of interpretive villages, an 18th century log cabin and trading post, and a 19th century village that includes an authentic Church, a one-room Schoolhouse, and a Blacksmith shop.
If you decide to take a trip to Meadowcroft , plan on spending at least 4 hours there; because there is a lot to see and experience. I took my little family there with my Cousin who was visiting from Italy, she is actually an Archaeologist (although she does not work in that field due to it's part-time work, and low pay)... ..
