An Italian friend of mine said to me at one point "We Italians are a little lazy today because well, we've invented so much already: we are masters of architecture, masters of food, masters of fashion...so we can now relax a bit and take it easy!"
Ha! I can't blame them very much - every little village I visit and every building I see is simply a masterpiece.
