We visited Magdalene College in Cambridge to do a photo walk and to visit the Pepys Library but it was closed. So for all you folks that can't get to see this college in person. Here are a few images of this very special place. We will return to visit the library in a future post.
Magdalene College entrance
The grounds are very well kept and very peaceful to walk around with many nice features to this 16th century building leading to the 17th century Pepys library.
College grounds
As we walk through the college grounds we see many interesting things. Below the clock tower is an interesting inscription in Old French which has been hotly debated by many students.
The modern translation of Garde Ta Foy is Keep your faith Considering that Magdalene College was founded by Benedictine monks back in the 15th century who were very adept at making herbal and alcoholic beverages. The inscription has sometimes been interpreted by some wags as Look after your liver!
Garde Ta Foy
Now we come to the jewel in the crown of this college the Pepys library. It holds many 1,000's of books from Samuel Pepys private collection and we will definitely be going back to take a look inside but for now here is the entrance.
We will have to get special permission to photograph the inside areas.
Pepys Library
If you have never heard of Samuel Pepys. I can highly recommend as a first read; his diaries. They are truly amazing and a window into his life in England in the 17th century.
