Here we are, about 2 months til the end of the year. In my part of the world the temperatures start to cool and dry. November sees the last of the leaves fall and the hard freezes set in. Everybody makes predictions at this time for what the Winter brings but few are ever close. It can be either 40 or -30F in the winter here, sometimes in the same week. Predictions are sure to make one look foolish in this environment.
In contrast, indoors this time of year becomes a time of growth. With the cooling weather all of my plants start to sigh in relief. The houseplants prefer the steady temperature and reduced light while the ones under lights don't have to deal with late-day heat. It's the time for lettuce, spinach and starting more sensitive plants. In this climate it's easier for me to heat the room than to cool it so starting seeds this time of year gives more consistent results. I'll have edible lettuce in 3 weeks and spinach in 4. Since I constantly pick the leaves I can cram them into starter pots for their lifetime. With about 9 plants per square foot it makes a nice carpet of salad in no time.
The lights have to either be tuned way down for these crops or placed way above the plants compared to cannabis. Gaps in the canopy are the perfect place to hide some non-devils lettuce. It would just go to waste otherwise so why not put it to work? Young peppers really like being shoved to the side and out of the full intensity of the grow light. If you're struggling with slow-growing pepper starts under lights, try lowering the intensity of the light.
This is also a good time to brew beer. Cool consistent temperatures makes better beer. The smell of yeast brewing and the steady blub-blub-blub of the airlock is another mark on this time of year for me. I wasn't planning on doing a batch but writing about it makes me want do one this year. Now where'd I put that carboy...

During the cold war the USSR used psychiatric hospitals to imprison political dissidents. In their findings, they demonstrated that diagnosing political reformists and aggitators as schizophrenic or multi personality disorder lead to a great silence of them and their follows than imprisoning them the classical way. The USSR showed that discrediting your opponents by falsely diagnosing them with severe psychological disorders and institutionlizing them had a greater effect than traditional methods.
First person cases are discussed with the individuals themselves that underwent this treatment and the fallout they suffered because of it.
This practice is still largely in use, not just in Russia, but all over the world as it is easier to silence certain individuals.
