There is something arcane, mysterious and terribly impenetrable in these early socio-cultural manifestations, which in the end constitute that universe, primitive, if not obscurely primal, which are the petroglyphs.
It is not, at all, sporadic manifestations, nor can any of our provinces, arrogar the privilege of being the cradle of a mode of expression that still, millennia after the extinction of its anonymous authors, continues hidden behind that hermetic protohistory, to which archaeologists seem to have vertigo and to which the Theosophists, in a distinctly romantic way, referred to as the hypothetical and impenetrable Veil of Isis.
Galicia, however, and despite these considerations, it may be, in terms of the subject to which we are referring, if not the largest, certainly one of the most prolific provinces in such references.
And although the scope of existence of this cryptic symbology extends without exception to the limits of its four provinces, it seems that, judging by the amount of that it boasts, Pontevedra is the province where more petroglyphs seem to have been located, which it does not mean, necessarily, that they are all properly classified, and what would be even more profitable and advisable, duly indicated.
Possibly, one of the places of worship - one might consider, that they were among the first to be discovered and possibly for that reason, those that received the most propaganda and popularity, to the point that some modern interference is suspected, which completely alter the message original-, be this of Mogor, enclave located in the Peninsula of Morrazo, and which is easily accessed from the beautiful and charismatic fishing village of Marin.
Close to a beautiful beach, in which still, and despite the demands of tourism, retains an interesting part of that ancestral forest that served as border with the dark sea, the reasons that stand out in their stark crags, show us less proliferation of animal animism -cigarettes and snakes mainly, were disputed, respectively, according to the opinion of some experts, the prominence in rock sanctuaries and castros-, present, above all, in the cultic locations located more inland, such as Touron, Amoedo or Campo Lameiro , and a greater subjective presence of geometric elements -circles, spirals and labyrinths, for the most part-, which should call our attention, not only with the familiarity they present with Mediterranean cultures, such as Cretan, and whose memory continued to preserve millennia then by pilgrims and stonemasons-let's not forget cathedrals, like Chartres-that somehow preserved the memory of a symbolism present in stellar roads, which already existed before Libredón produced the supposed apparition of the tomb of the Apostle and the Camino de Santiago became another of the great pilgrimage routes, capable of overshadowing those of Rome and Jerusalem.
But still, there is something else; something that, although it may seem a figment more to all suggestions, hypotheses or comments have been said on the subject, I would not rule it out without more.
And it is that, if we observe in a plane, the distribution of authentic megalithic temples, like the one of Stonehenge or the one of Woodhenge, in Great Britain (1), we will observe, not without certain surprise, that its plant, remembers us, with one more or less accurate regularity, some of these circular designs, including the small cups inserted inside, which could well coincide with the placement of the interior bases of such a suggestive place.
