First stage. Umber block in of shapes of darks/shadows:
While the block in was painted using a brush, the rest of the painting was done with a knife. Sometimes I will only use brushes in a painting, sometimes only a knife, and often times both. I begin painting directly with color:
I paint directly with an "alla prima" approach. Even though a painting will take longer than one sitting, the methodology is still alla prima. I paint my darkest darks, lightest lights, and most saturated color as soon as possible. There are many ways to paint, but this method suits me. Next stage:
