The Mysterious World
I thought it might be interesting to look at how art developed over time so I'm writing this series of articles. Today, we are starting in the Ice Age.
The above image is one of the oldest cave paintings in the world at around 30000 years old. Bhimbetka rock shelters where it is situated, are at Madhya Pradesh, which is a state of India.
It's drawn in red and white. The white colour was made from the chemical manganese. Today, we use manganese white acrylic and watercolour. The red was made from wood charcoal and red-coloured stones.
I like the wild animals that are being hunted by the stick people.
My favourite drawing is the little chicken. Which one do you like best?

The cave painting above dates between 13,000–9,000 BP. It is located at Perito Moreno, Argentina.
The hand stencils were made by covering hands in paint then pressing them on to the cave walls. It was a popular form of art in those days.
Today we use the same technique, particularly in children's art.

The image above is thought to be of three women coming home. It can be found in a cave at Altimira, Spain and is around 8000 years old.
I think the figures have more shape and attitude than the earlier ones.
I hope you enjoyed this little trip into art history. I did!
