Donald Trump Painting by Tommervik in the Cubist Style
I understand Impressionism and even Pop Art but Cubism confuses me. I decided to look into it so I can have a go at doing a Cubist painting.
This is what I found out:
To do a Cubist painting you need to view your subject from different angles then try to combine them into one image.
This painting by Picasso is a good example to show how it is done. There are a front view eye and a side view eye on the same face. Hmm, I think I'll be able to do that.
Geometric shapes and straight lines are also a feature of Cubism. It is thought that the cube shape is where the name came from.
Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque invented the style in the early 20th Century.
Here is one of Picasso's famous works:
NGV
Weeping Woman by Picasso
This is one of Georges Braque's works:
Tate
Bottle and Fishes by Georges Braque**
I understand the concept more in Picasso's work than Braque's. Braque's painting is very disjointed with parts of the fish all over the place.
I can, however, see the fascination of this style of art although it seems a bit contrived to me.
So I'll be having a go at Cubism. Does it inspire you?
