Hi all, I was writing a bit of my web-novel Green Pastures at the laundromat earlier which left me wondering: do apple trees grow in the wild in southern Alaska? I’m going to have to research that. Anyway, I was just messing around with my acrylic inks tonight. My model was originally painted loosely around the beginning of the Christian calendar which marks the birth of Christ. The Fayum portraits were found in Egypt and were painted with ancaustics which is basically warm bee’s wax. I have painted in encaustic before, it is really interestingly tactile in nature. The paint dries instantly which is surprising at first. It takes a lot of experience to gain any kind of precision with it.
I started with this drawing, it’s a really quick and fun part of making the art,
Drawing rough shapes with bigger brushes only using the burnt umber. Something to build upon.
Adding contrast and precise detail. I get into the hatching to accentuate the form in a graphic style. It is an homage to the hatching on the original which is much softer.
Here is the original, I was really drawn to the darkness in his eyes.
Thanks for watching!
