I am starting to look at adopting a dog again. I don't know if I am ready to take one home soon but I have been checking shelters to see what kind of dogs they have available. This little collie crossbreed, Lucy is very sweet. She reminded me a bit of my last dog when she was young. Until I have adoption papers in my hands, I don't want to get too excited about any particular dog because they may find homes before I apply. Still, I wanted to draw Lucy because she is a beautiful colour and so cheerful.
I painted her in Adobe Photoshop CS6. I will break down the process here:
I always start with a flat background colour other than white, just to reduce glare and to ease me into sketching a basic shape. I am drawing with the 'Thick Heavy Brush Set'.
After that, I start adding some shading and other colours. Vague details of the eyes and ears appear.
This step took a little longer than the last two because it involves zooming in and cleaning up the brushstrokes or adding smaller details.
Here is an animated gif to cover the steps in this post.

I added some more highlights to Lucy's fur, moved her tail slightly and signed the sketch. It took me about 45 minutes to complete. In time, I could return to it and add a background or I could use it as a study for future dog paintings.
