Focus [...] You can work on that and learn something about stone. For instance, that it is very available and accessible as a material, very versatile and fragile and that you have to be very careful with it. Then the stone eventually becomes transparent: you see an image through it.
Yet, the observer already has an image of stone that is determined by the comparison of this material with the human body.
Stone is 'hard, brutal, heavy, dense, silent and old'. And comes with asociations are seen as strict, powerful, weighty, closed, static and eternal. With that, emotions are connected, memories and wishes, the judgment of the day.
All that and more is influencing the image through the use of stone, even before the artwork is created.
Stone is not only of stone alone, but peppered with words and full of feelings. Its own simple presence is not available for the image. There is always the intervention of the language that gives its own twist to the imagination.
**And what applies to stone applies to everything and all of us. **
