Trees, strings, candles, streetlamps… ‘tis the season for lights of all kinds! Night is a bit brighter and more colorful this time of year. Here are some examples of “light painting” that tap into a little holiday spirit.
Bright Lights Big City
Here, New York City in the 1970s was captured with sparklers and Christmas lights! American photographer Eric Staller specialized in long exposure. His work recorded a creatively eerie urban environment by tracing boundaries, proportions and silhouettes.
Tracing Human Scale
Back in 1949, world renowned artist Pablo Picasso was visited by a photographer named Gjon Mili. The Albanian-American photographer approached the painter with a light on the end of a paintbrush and asked him to paint in the air. Using a longer exposure, Mili captured Picasso’s hand criss-crossing and weaving through the air. Here are a few images from the playful photography series these two created together.
