Sharing my latest animal portrait of endangered animals
This is also my piece for Baihinang Art Exhibit on june which focuses on the impressions of Mindanao Life.
The Philippine Eagle
Pithecophaga Jefferyi
Title: Pithecophaga Jefferyi
Medium: Coloredpencils
Size: 12" x 16"
Time: 2 weeks
The Philippine eagle is considered as the raptor with the widest wing span, it was previously considered as a harpy eagle because of its appearance of having a crown but latest studies show that this eagle is more closely related to serpent eagles.
Sadly they are critically endangered. The eagles are in a reserve and set free once adult.
They still face threats such as:
- Habitat loss
- Hunting
- Electrocution by live wires on towers
Hopefully their population can be restored.
For the Mindanao theme, I chose a nice picture of an eagle. This photo is by Roy Tiu who generously agreed to let me use his photo as a reference.

This is a very nice shot with a good lighting and shadows too. This picture stood out the most. Very blessed to have found this.
Process
- Start from light to dark
- Be aware of the light source and contrast of shadows
- Background is achieved by layering green, violet, blue, brown, yellow and black.
- To smoothen roughness use a purple or sky blue pencil and burnish it.
- Use pen to darken shadows and create depth, this will make your art more real as it creates 3D effect of overlaying feathers.
- The background here is still rough so I blend with a blue pencil but very light. The direction is outward and like sunlight
The finished work
- Frame it!
Ready for the exhibit!
I still have to draw one more piece.
I hope it goes successfully as planned.
