Here's a piece I carved for a good customer. Ordered for a wedding present to his wife and himself. They love all things Sleepy Hollow, even going there to get married. I have a few photos of it's creation process I'd like to share. Here's a night shot I thought was pretty cool.
Started off by cutting a large log in half down the middle...doesn't take much to start taking shape.
Found the pumpkin head in another log, attached it and cut out all of the negative space. Since we were close to Halloween season, I carved a happy little jack-o'-lantern as well.
Here it is after some slight refining. Ready to be torched...
Burned with a roofing torch, charring it black and then sanding all the carbon off with a flapsander. Lightening all the raised areas while leaving deep spots dark. Helps with contrast, making it pop. Some carvers call it finished at this point but customers usually have the final say.
He wanted him painted/stained and dark. Here is the finished product. Along with a stand I made for it to match. A fun project and happy customer.
