“My Nana’s Home Town- Shitakara Village”

I created this cut paper art. This is my vision of my grandma’s childhood memory. My grandmother is very old and she is staying at a nursing home. These days, I am not able to communicate with her much because of COVID-19. Her home is trying so hard to protect their clients. So, they limit visitors. I lost my grandfather because he caught a cold from his nurse a few years ago and it caused pneumonia and then, he passed away. I feel thankful to my grandmother’s home’s people because I don’t want to lose my grandmother to COVID-19.

Anyway, I tried to create my grandma’s memory cut paper art because I wanted to show my grandmother. This is my grandma’s hometown called Shitakara village in Akan, Hokkaido. Nowadays, people call this village Tsurui village. Tsuru means crane because there are many beautiful Japanese cranes. This village is pretty close to Akan town. This town is in the Kushiro area.

When my grandmother was standing outside when she was a child, she saw some will-o'-the- wisps floating above a field. My grandmother thought “Somebody passed away today.” As soon as she thought so, beautiful cranes appeared and flew away with the will-o’ the - wisps. It was an awesome sunset. My grandmother stood there for a while by herself.

This is my grandmother’s story which she told me many times when I was young. I loved to listen to this story. I also drew my grandmother’s older sister who passed away when she was a child. My grandmother loved her sister so much so I decided to put them together on this cut paper art even though her sister wasn’t there at that time. I hope my grandmother can feel her happy memory when she sees this cut paper art.

“おばあちゃんの故郷-舌辛村”

この切り絵は、わたしの祖母の小さな頃の思い出を描いたものです。祖母はかなり高齢で、現在は老人ホームにお世話になっています。ここ最近はコロナの影響で、あまり祖母と交流ができていません。老人ホームはかなり慎重に入居者にコロナ感染をさせないように面会を厳しく制限してくれています。わたしの祖父は数年前に看護師さんの風邪がうつりそのまま肺炎となって亡くなってしまったので、祖母の老人ホームの慎重な対応にはとても感謝しています。

そこで、思い出を描いた切り絵を祖母に見せたくて作成しました。ここは北海道阿寒郡鶴居村、旧舌辛村の様子です。鶴居村にはそれはそれは美しい鶴がたくさん生息しています。鶴居村は阿寒町にほど近く、釧路圏内にあります。

祖母が小さな頃、外にいると、向こう岸の空にフワフワと浮かぶ綺麗な人魂を見かけました。祖母は今日はどなたか亡くなったんだなと思った瞬間、美しい鶴たちがフワーッと現れたかと思うと、その人魂と一緒に飛んで行ったそうです。その日はたいそう素晴らしい夕焼けだったそうです。祖母はしばらくその場にひとりで立ち尽くしていたそうです。

これは祖母がわたしが小さな頃よく聞かせてくれた話です。わたしはこの話を聞くのが好きでした。この切り絵の中には祖母の横に幼くして亡くなった祖母のお姉さんも一緒に描きました。その場にお姉さんはいませんでしたが、祖母の大好きだったお姉さんも描いて二人を一緒にしたかったのです。この切り絵を祖母が喜んで見てくれるといいなと思います。
