How I got started on the dragon art journey.
I am a huge fan of challenges, they give me extra motivation and energy to get art done, even when it's hard. I regularly check art channels and art groups; and one challenge that I came across in different forms is 100 (or more) designs challenge. One of the best examples is The Daily Zoo. Also you can watch Jake Parker's detailed video explanation about the challenge here.
Wise
" The wise prefer to nest in deep mountain caves and can grow huge depending on availability of prey in their region. It can read and write which is rare among dragons. They love art".
I used to have many empty sketchbooks, because I worried too much that I would mess them up. Wise was my first dragon where i decided to design minimum of 100 unique dragons. A generic European dragon, but! With long whiskers. The name to reflect the beginning of my learning journey.
Basilisk
" Basilisk's scales are deep green with unusual purple-blue tint in sunlight. It sprays burning blood from the eyes that often kills. Basilisk can easily hypnotize the prey or enemy with eye contact."
Initially the dragons had no backstory or descriptions. The ones in this post I added much later to make the dragons more interesting and keep the project consistent.
Altum- (Latin -deep water)
" Altum makes a sound reminiscent of whales. They exist in a variety of colors and blends of colors."
This creature was inspired by a variety of goldfish that you can see here. I came across a photo and decided to do a couple of pages of goldfish studies. After I did those I was inspired to create this dragon.
Aslan
" Always on the move, following one can lead to amazing discoveries."
Tineasaurus
" A friendly dragon, that loves berries and insects. The younglings can fly, while the adults are too heavy to lift off with their paper-thin wings.
This is a cute parody of traditional lizard dragons with bat wings.
Yelun
" A majestic creature with a hot temper. It loves starting fights with its antlers. Usually found in colder climates."
"Yelun" is derived from Croatian word "jelen" meaning deer.
Solis
" The magical source of creativity and creation."
This was an attempt at making a dragon design for the Sun tarot card. Eventually I hope to create the whole deck.
Nightshade
" It has silver horns and hooves, it has only been during Solaces. It is still unknown whether it's otherwise invisible, or if simply vanishes to somewhere else."
One of the few non-dragon designs I attempted. The design is little unbalanced as I started with 3 heads, but there was so much empty space, that I added to more heads in the back.
A Happy Dragon Family
