The archetype figure of The Devil existed long before the Church demonized him. He was the philanderer Greek God Pan also known as the Roman God, Faunus.
His animalesque look, but especially his erotic and wild nature was dangerous for a Christian human soul.
So the church inhibited the sinful creature, mutating the old spirit in the hand behind pestilence, cataclysmic events and instigator/temptress for the human soul.
Feared and loathed, the hermaphroditic figure was and it's a reminded of the dormant animal-state within.
